Sousou No Frieren

Sousou No Frieren (Japanese: 葬送のフリーレン) is a Japanese manga originally written by Akito Yamada and drawn by Abeji, which began serialization on April 28, 2020 in Weekly Shonen Sunday 2020 Issue 22 and Issue 23 combined. The television anime adaptation premiered on September 29, 2023.

The story is set in a fictional world filled with magic and fantastical creatures. It narrates the experiences of a group of heroes whose focus shifts to the Elf Magician Frieren after successfully defeating the Dark Lord.

After a decade-long adventure, the human warrior Himmel, dwarven fighter Eisen, human priest Heiter, and elven magician Frieren return triumphantly as heroes for vanquishing the Dark Lord. They receive accolades from the king, and on that celebratory night, they coincidentally witness a once-in-fifty-years meteor shower. The four friends pledge to reunite and observe this rare phenomenon together fifty years later. For Frieren, who has a long lifespan, fifty years pass like the blink of an eye. However, when she decides to fulfill the promise and return to the capital, she discovers that her former adventuring companions have all aged. After enjoying the meteor shower, the hero Himmel peacefully passes away. His death fills Frieren with regret for not understanding him better while he was alive. This prompts Frieren, who was previously indifferent to the ephemeral nature of human lives, to embark on a journey of self-redemption and a desire to comprehend human emotions more deeply.

Guided by the instructions left by Frieren's mentor, the human Archmage Flamme, a millennium ago, Frieren sets out with the magician Fern (Heiter's adopted daughter) and the dwarf Eisen's apprentice, Stark. They retraced the path of the heroes' conquest of the Dark Lord, aiming to find Himmel's soul in the resting place located at the northernmost ruins of the former Dark Lord's castle on the continent. Their mission is to utter the words that remained unsaid for decades.
